Organizing Apps Into Folders - Android

Date Written: 9/26/13

With so many app options, it's easy to let the main screens of your phone or tablet become overrun with App icons. Luckily, there are two easy ways to organize these.

Moving App Icons on Android

Moving an icon on your Android device is simple. All you need to do is hold your finger down on an app icon for a second and then move it wherever you want.

You can drag an icon to appear someplace different on the same screen or drag the icon to the far right or left of the screen to move the icon to a different page. You can also edit the icons that always appear on the bottom menu. Drag the icons from the menu the same way and then you can replace them with icons that you use more frequently and would like to appear on every screen.

If you have an app that you don't use too often, you can also choose to have it not show on any of your main screens and only appear in your App Folder. When you hold your finger down on an app icon for a second or two, you will notice a Remove option appear somewhere on the screen. To remove the icon from that screen, drag the icon to the word Remove.

Creating Folders on Android

Another way to organize the apps on your Android device is to create folders. Starting with Android 4.0, you are able to create app folders quickly that will save you space and help you stay organized. A lot of people like to put similar apps into the same folder, such as a folder for work related apps or games.

To create a folder, you are going to hold your finger down on an app icon that you want to move into a folder for a second or two. Then you will drag it on top of a second app you want to include in the same folder and let go. This will add both icons into a folder. If you tap on the folder, you can then give the folder a name.

On some Samsung phones, to create a folder you will need to tap on Menu from the home screen and then tap on Add Folder. Then you can drag and drop your apps into it.
