Cases to Protect your Smartphone

Date Written: 07/17/14

Anyone who owns a smartphone or tablet should be using a case to protect it. This is especially true if you are using the device on-site for inspections. When climbing up on roofs, going in crawlspaces, and even everyday life, your device is bound to take some bumps and falls so be sure to use a case.

Typically smartphones will take more wear and tear because they are being used on a regular basis for inspections, calls, emails, internet, etc. When looking for a case for your smartphone, it can be overwhelming with so many options. We are going to discuss some of the options to make sure your phone is well protected.

There are several different types of cases available and the key to choosing the right one will be deciding how much protection you really need. If you have a smartphone that you take all over the property for inspections, you’ll want something tough that can take some bumps. If you only use your phone to make calls and you leave it in your pocket, you may want a case that’s thinner and lighter. We’ll discuss some different types of cases below:

Rugged Cases

Rugged cases are going to provide the most protection for your device, but they are also going to be the bulkiest and heaviest. Typically a rugged case may make the phone difficult to carry in a pocket, so you may look into wearing the phone on a belt clip or holster instead. These cases are built to withstand drops and protect the phone from water and dust. Usually they cover every part of the phone, even the screen and buttons which can make it a little difficult to tap on the screen with some cases. However, if you’re looking for the best protection for your smartphone then a rugged case is the way to go.

Tough Cases

Tough cases are a step below rugged cases, but are still designed to survive a drop. These cases will be slimmer and lighter than rugged cases and allow you to access all of the buttons on your phone. Tough cases will usually come with a lip around the front of the phone in case the phone is dropped and lands face down. They will typically be cheaper than rugged cases and should provide decent protection.

Basic Cases

Basic cases are going to be slim, light cases that offer basic protection. They usually come as one piece that will snap onto your phone and will be able to protect the back of your phone from scratches. They will provide some protection from a drop, but nothing like a rugged or tough case. Basic cases are probably too basic for many home inspectors, because they do not provide much drop protection or water and dust resistance.

Basic Smartphone Case

If you plan on using your smartphone for your home inspections, we recommend a rugged case. Spending $50 is well worth it to protect your smartphone that you spent a couple hundred on. You’ll thank us when your phone slips out of your hand on that roof.
