Apple Announces iOS 8

Apple Announces iOS 8

Date Written: 6/5/14

This past Monday (June 2, 2014), Apple announced iOS 8 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The latest mobile operating system update is not a complete overhaul like iOS 7, but there are quite a few new features. We’ll discuss some of the new features below:

  • Notification Center - Apple has updated the notification center that appears at the top of the iPhone and iPad. With iOS 8, you will now be able to reply directly from the notification screen without leaving the app you are currently in. You can reply from the lockscreen as well.
  • QuickType - iOS 8 will update the keyboard on the mobile device to include predictive text. This is nothing new to Android users, but is a nice feature to help save time when typing on your smartphone or tablet. The demonstration of QuickType seemed smooth and promising.
  • Improvements to Siri - Siri will receive a few updates as well with iOS 8. If you have your iPhone plugged into your car, you can now wake Siri by voice without touching the device. This is a nice feature for when you are driving. Siri can also identify songs now.
  • HealthKit - Similar to the new Samsung Galaxy S5, iOS 8 introduces a new health driven feature called HealthKit. HealthKit is a suite that will allow you to track and monitor your health, pulling information from various apps and integrating with the Mayo Clinic.
  • HomeKit - HomeKit will allow users to control their garage doors, locks, lights, cameras, and thermostats with their smartphone or tablet. Of course, you will need the necessary equipment that works with HomeKit.

There are also updates to the iCloud, photo editing, messaging, email, and more. Apple iOS 8 will be released in the fall of 2014 and will work with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPad Mini with Retina Display.
