Pixel 4 and 4 XL

Pixel 4 and 4 XL

Date Written: 11/7/2019

On October 15, 2019, Google announced the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones. They were released shortly after on October 24th. The devices have an improved look and feel, as well as, upgraded internal hardware over last year’s models.

The early reviews for the Pixel 4 are mixed. Battery life is shorter than previous models and device performance isn’t as strong as expected. The issue isn’t that the Pixel 4 is a bad device (in fact most agree it’s a very solid device), but the concern is that for the high cost of the device there are better alternatives.

Pixel devices have had a few major advantages over other phones the past couple of years. One is that they are first in line to receive updates to the Android operating system and this is still the case with the Pixel 4. One that has been removed is the fact that Google no longer offers unlimited Google Photos backup at full quality. There is still unlimited backup, but it is at a lesser quality. Another advantage that has changed is related to the camera. For years, Pixel devices were ahead in the quality of pictures that they could take. This is no longer the case as competitors have caught up, and in some ways surpassed, the Pixel in this area. With that said, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL still take great pictures.

The Pixel 4 is a good device and a good option for home inspectors to use. These should be on the list of potential options for an inspector looking at getting an Android smartphone. Is it worth buying over a device like the Samsung Galaxy S10? That’s up to you to decide.
