Date Written: 11/6/14

Android's latest operating system, 5.0, also known as 'Lollipop' has begun to be available for certain devices as of this week. As with other Android updates it can take some time before it will be available for all Android devices.

There are a lot of new features and below is a list of some of the key ones:

  • Battery - There is a new battery saver feature that allows you to extend the use of your device by up to 90 minutes. You'll also be able to see an estimated time left on your device before it needs to be charged again, as well as, an estimated time left to fully charge when the device is plugged in and charging.
  • Device Sharing - You can now create multiple user accounts on your phone which is great if you often share your phone with friends or family. There is also a 'Guest' user which allows you to let someone use your phone without seeing all of your personal information. Screen pinning allows you to pin your screen so that another user can access just the content on the screen and not everything else on your phone.
  • Updated Notification Options - You now have more control on how and when you receive messages. One option is to turn on Priority Mode so that only certain people and types of notifications will get through. You are also able to view and respond to messages directly from the lock screen and you can hide sensitive content on notifications you receive. Another option is to choose to avoid calls from interrupting the app you are using (game you're playing or movie you're watching for example).
Updated Camera - Includes better support for camera features like burst mode and allows you to capture full resolution frames around 30fps.
  • Tap and Go - This feature is great if you are setting up a new Android phone or tablet as it allows you to sync your apps from one device to another by simply tapping the devices.
Updated Interface - Google says that the new Material design interface is more intuitive and allows for a more fluid transition between tasks. It gives everything a more 3-D feel.
