Date Written: 4/5/2018

Android P is the next major version of the Android Operating System and was announced by Google on March 7th. It is still months away from release, but is currently available for developers to preview. We'll most likely see it available for consumers sometime in the fall.

The final release will have many changes from what is currently available in Android P. This could involve new features being added and/or tweaks being made to what already exists. With that said, below is a list of some of what is new at this stage:

  • Updated Look - Google is utilizing rounded corners in many places that used to be square. There are other updates as well that help give it a 'fresher' look.
  • Notification Improvements - 'Smart Replies' will be available for notifications which will make interacting with notifications (especially from Messaging apps) faster and easier.
  • Improved Screenshots - It's now easier to take screenshots than ever before as all you have to do is press and hold the power button. Once you take a screenshot you'll immediately have options to edit and mark it up as desired.
  • Improved Security - There have been quite a few changes to improve the security of information on your device. One of the changes is the ability to 'lock down' your device by tapping a button. This will disable the fingerprint sensor and voice unlock which means it can only be unlocked by a PIN or pattern.
Lock Landscape Mode - You can now lock your phone in the landscape orientation.
  • Support for Notches - There is a setting that allows developers to preview the device with a 'notch' at the top of the screen. This will help developers make sure their apps work well with notches since this is a trend we will most likely see on more and more phones moving forward.
