Samsung Galaxy Tab s4

Samsung Galaxy Tab s4

Date Written: 8/9/2018

The Tab S4 is the latest model in Samsung's Galaxy tablet series and was announced on August 1, 2018. It has a larger screen then last year's S3 (10.5-inch vs 9.7-inch), while still keeping the actual device at a similar size. It includes the high-end internal hardware that you would expect from a high-end tablet and is claimed to have up to 16 hours of battery life when playing videos.

The Tab S4 was designed to compete not only with Apple's iPad series, but also with the Microsoft's Surface Pro series. It includes a stylus pen and you have the ability to switch to DeX mode which is setup to be similar to a typical Windows device. You can have multiple apps open at a time and you can resize them to the be the size you want. The intention is to make it easier to be productive when working. You can purchase a separate keyboard (it's pricey at around $150) and can connect to an external monitor. You can switch between DeX mode and the standard Android mode as needed.

Overall this looks like a solid device. The Tab S series has been one of the strongest Android tablets series the past few years and the S4 looks like a good addition to it. The big question is whether or not DeX mode is enough to draw people away from Windows laptops/tablets in favor of the S4. Early feedback/reviews from people lean towards it being a good step in that direction, but still not a device that will be the productivity workhorse of a good Windows laptop.
