Android Home Inspection Software-Android OS

Date Written: January 2012

Many home inspectors are interested in using an Android based phone or tablet to run their home inspection software for creating reports. Below is some useful information about Android devices and their operating systems

Android is Google's operating system for mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. The Android operating system is open source, which basically means there is a large community of developers creating applications that extend the functionality of these devices. Unlike the Apple iPhone and iPad, there are different manufacturers that create Android devices including Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Toshiba, and Acer to name a few.

Currently there are over 200 million Android devices in use around the world and that number is constantly growing. There have been three major releases for the Android operating system. You'll notice that each version is named in alphabetical order after a dessert. More information on these can be seen below:

  • 2.3 Gingerbread - If you own an Android phone, this is most likely the version of Android that your device is running.
  • 3.2 Honeycomb - If you own an Android tablet, this is most likely the version of Android that your device is running. This was a tablet oriented release and supports devices with larger screens. It also introduces a number of new interface features. The Motorola Xoom was the first device featuring this version.
  • 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich - This is Android's most recent version release and was just announced on October 19, 2011. It brings many of Honeycomb's features to phones and also adds several new features, such as the ability to take screenshots and adds a cleaner interface for the user. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the first phone released with this version and more devices will begin getting this update in 2012.
