Android 8.1

Date Written: 1/25/2018

The latest update to the Android operating system is 8.1. This update has been rolling out to devices that run the Android 8.0 operating system, which at this time is still a limited number of phones and tablets. It includes the usual amount of bug fixes and minor improvements, as well as, a few new features. None of the new features are game changers, but that's to be expected with an update like this. Many of the updates are geared towards developers versus end users, but of course in time, more capabilities for developers leads to better app experiences for users. Below is a list of some of some of what is new:

  • Displays WiFi Speeds - You can now see the speed of a WiFi network before connecting. A network will show as one of four speeds which are: Very Fast, Fast, OK and Slow.
  • Neural Network API - This is designed to allow developers to run machine-learning on devices. This might not have an immediate impact for users, but it gives developers more tools for what they can do with apps.
  • Bluetooth Device Battery Levels - You can now see how much battery power your Bluetooth connected devices have left.
  • Android Go - This is a low-end configuration of the Android operating system that device makers can now start using on low-end hardware.
  • Visual Core Enabled - This feature enables the Pixel 2 phone to utilize the co-processor built-in to the device to take better pictures.
  • Improved Auto-Fill
  • Safer internet browsing
  • Fingerprint updates
  • Notification updates
  • And more!
