Android O

Android O

Date Written: 5/4/2017

The next major update to the Android operating system will be Android O. This is still being worked on but it is currently available for developer preview. The past few years these major updates have officially been released in the fall so following this pattern we can expect to start seeing this hit specific devices somewhere between late August and early November. As always, these major updates roll out to different devices over time so it may not be available for your device until much later.

There is still a lot of time before this version will be released, as we don't even have a name yet, so there is still opportunity for more features to be added and tweaked from what we know today. With that said, here is a quick rundown on some of what's currently new with Android O:

  • Background Limits is designed to save battery life by putting additional limits on what apps can do in the background.
  • Picture-in-Picture allows you to continue viewing a video while doing other things on the device.
  • Notification channels give users more control over how they want to manage notifications from apps.
  • Adaptive Icons give users more control on how app icons are displayed.
  • Smart Sharing is where the device better understands content and what apps the content is relevant to.
  • Connectivity changes include high-quality bluetooth audio and Neighborhood Aware Networking (NAN) connectivity.
